I'd been playing with the idea for a while of possibly hosting a Haruki Murakami Reading Challenge next year. Then when I mentioned it on Twitter a couple of weeks or so ago, quite a few people expressed interest, so here we are. The goal of the challenge is simply to encourage you to discover, or re-discover, the unique story-telling of Haruki Murakami. It's a really flexible challenge and all you have to do to participate is read at least one book by Haruki Murakami in 2011. (If you're planning on reading 1Q84 when the English translation comes out next fall, that's enough to complete the challenge!). However, there are several levels of participation to choose from, for those that want to immerse themselves more in Murakami's surreal worlds.
Levels of participation:
Hajime - Read one book
Sheep Man - Read 3 books
Toru - Read 5 books
Nakata - Read 7 books
Sumire - Read 10+ books
Super-frog - Read everything Murakami has written! (that is available in English, or your preferred language) For a list of the books available in English, visit the Books Page.
Things to keep in mind:
*The goal is simply to read something/ANYthing by Haruki Murakami.
*Whether you're a complete newbie, or already a huge Murakami fan, everyone is welcome to join in.
*You can join in anytime.
*Feel free to grab either of the buttons but please save them to your own computer first.
*There is no need to list your books in advance, and even if you do, you can change them any time.
*You can also change your level of participation at any time because sometimes life just gets in the way.
*You don't have to have a blog to participate. You can also share your thoughts on Goodreads, LibraryThing, etc.
*Crossovers with other challenges are allowed. (Don't forget that anything you read for this challenge also counts for Bellezza's Japanese Literature Challenge).
*Books should be read between January 1st and December 31st, 2011.
(However, I welcome you to submit reviews to any of Murakami's books or stories that you have read and reviewed previously. More on the 'Submit a review' page.)
*Books can be in any format: paper, ebooks, audio.
*Rereads are allowed, and encouraged.
*There will be prizes (details to be decided).
*And most importantly, have fun!

ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea. I will participate in Nakata levle. 1. A Wild Sheep Chase 2. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the Wold 3. Pinball, 1973 4. Hear the Wind Sing 5 Dance Dance Dance 6 Underground 7.Birthday Stories **I could not open Underground since 1997 becuase the incident was very overwelming to me. It seems like a supersitition that it might happen again if I open the book and response to it. However, now is the time to break the jinx. Thanks for the opportunity.

ReplyDeleteI've only just come across Haruki Murakami's work -- I was given the best-selling 'Norwegian Wood' as a present and already can't put it down!
ReplyDeleteAlthough the beginning seemed to be a bit 'jerky' to me, I am becoming more and more hooked as I turn each page.
Murakami has a simple yet wonderful way with words. Masterfully mixing pathos with (at times rather disturbing) humour, he also has the ability to spin a colourful turn of phrase that is reminiscent of if not equal to the 'greats' such as Hunter S Thompson, Marcel Proust, Charles Dickens and F Scott Fitzgerald.
I have a feeling I will wanting to read (much) more of Murakami's work soon enough. ;0)

ReplyDeleteI read my first Murakami -- "After Dark" -- last year and admired it, but "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" has been highly recommended to me. Also, I'm thinking about taking up running this year, and perhaps entering a race, so "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running" might be a good choice.

ReplyDeleteI read about this challenge in a _Salon_ article, without realizing that I have unintentionally read a Murakami book in each of the previous two years. In 2009, I read _Kafka on the Shore_ and in 2010, I read _Norwegian Wood_. This year, I will prioritize what is often revered as his masterpiece, _The Wind Up Bird Chronicle_, although I may add even more Murakami to my personal "100-books in 2010" goal. What an awesome challenge!

I have read and own everything Murakami has ever written, including the elusive Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973. I just finished Norwegian Wood for a third time, and will be revisiting Kafka on the Shore soon. I'll dive into the rest later.

ReplyDeleteI'm already on two Murakami books so far this year. I want to reread several books too. I'm trying to read 52 books in total this year, so I'm happy that several Murakami's will be devoured.
Hello guys I just joined the Murakami Reading Challenge and had just read Norwegian Wood (Jay Rubin translation). I am going to go for Kafka on the Shore next and read all his other works before buying 1Q84 in October later.

I just bought South of The Border, East of the Sun yesterday to satiate my frequent need for a Murakami fix (I've read eight so far), and i'm psyched to see that this exists :) Fitting, because once I finish it, I'll be Hajime, right at the beginning again.

ReplyDeleteI just posted my review on Sputnik Sweetheart. It was my second Murakami and I enjoyed it a lot. I'm not sure which one will be next. I could read 1Q84 as the German translation is already out but I think I'll go for Norwegian Wood.

ReplyDeleteI just read "After the Quake" and i'm beginning to read "Hear the Wind Sings", both for the first time ever. After that I will be reading "1Q84" and "Underground". I love them all!
ReplyDeleteI read and re-read Murakami on a habitual basis. I mostly read his work in Chinese, and over the years I have quite a large collection of Murakami's works.

Just cracked open Kafka on the Shore - I've read quite a few of Murakami's books, but I thought this challenge would be good motivation to get through a few I've been saving.

Not Strictly Murakami, but about the man is Jay Rubin's book - Haruki Murakami & the music of words, it provides a fascinating insight into the authors work.

I just came across the article on this on 'The Vine' and I jumped at the challenge. I love books and I can't wait to discover the workings of Haruki Murakami (of which I haven't had the pleasure of reading yet). I haven't chosen which novel I am going to begin with, but once I do you'll be the first to know!

ReplyDeleteI read about this earlier in the year, and wanted to get through most of Murakami's work before joining/commenting. I can proudly say I have read every work of his in English except for South of the Border, West of the Sun which I can read in one sitting. And IQ84 which is sadly not released until October!
ReplyDeleteNot sure if my original comment got posted (I just signed in to my google account after attempting to post it), but the gist of it was that I've read all of Murakami's works except for South of the Border, West of the Sun so far in 2011 and am eagerly awaiting IQ84's English release. =) Cool challenge!
