Haruki Murakami Reading Challenge 2011
I'd been playing with the idea for a while of possibly hosting a Haruki Murakami Reading Challenge next year. Then when I mentioned it on Twitter a couple of weeks or so ago, quite a few people expressed interest, so here we are. The goal of the challenge is simply to encourage you to discover, or re-discover, the unique story-telling of Haruki Murakami. It's a really flexible challenge and all you have to do to participate is read at least one book by Haruki Murakami in 2011. (If you're planning on reading 1Q84 when the English translation comes out next fall, that's enough to complete the challenge!). However, there are several levels of participation to choose from, for those that want to immerse themselves more in Murakami's surreal worlds.
Levels of participation:
Hajime - Read one book
Sheep Man - Read 3 books
Toru - Read 5 books
Nakata - Read 7 books
Sumire - Read 10+ books
Super-frog - Read everything Murakami has written! (that is available in English, or your preferred language) For a list of the books available in English, visit the Books Page.
Things to keep in mind:
*The goal is simply to read something/ANYthing by Haruki Murakami.
*Whether you're a complete newbie, or already a huge Murakami fan, everyone is welcome to join in.
*You can join in anytime.
*Feel free to grab either of the buttons but please save them to your own computer first.
*There is no need to list your books in advance, and even if you do, you can change them any time.
*You can also change your level of participation at any time because sometimes life just gets in the way.
*You don't have to have a blog to participate. You can also share your thoughts on Goodreads, LibraryThing, etc.
*Crossovers with other challenges are allowed. (Don't forget that anything you read for this challenge also counts for Bellezza's Japanese Literature Challenge).
*Books should be read between January 1st and December 31st, 2011.
(However, I welcome you to submit reviews to any of Murakami's books or stories that you have read and reviewed previously. More on the 'Submit a review' page.)
*Books can be in any format: paper, ebooks, audio.
*Rereads are allowed, and encouraged.
*There will be prizes (details to be decided).
*And most importantly, have fun!
Sign up for the Haruki Murakami Reading Challenge in the Mr. Linky below. If you have an introductory post about the challenge, feel free to link to it directly. This is not required though so you may simply add a link to your blog's home page to show your intention to join the challenge. If you don't have a blog, you can leave your name and contact information in a comment on this post.
Note: Mr. Linky seems to be having some hiccups at the moment. It can take a couple of tries for your link to go through. Let me know if you continue to have any problems and I can add you in. Thanks for your patience.
Now that you've signed up, don't forget to come back here to the challenge blog to add your reviews, and to follow the blog to be notified of giveaways and other Murakami news throughout the year.
Happy reading!

Here goes nothing!
ReplyDeleteYay! Stealing those awesome buttons for my blog rrrright away! :)
ReplyDeleteBTW would you count 1Q84 as 1 or 2 books??? I think it's two!
ReplyDeleteI'm in too. Hopefully you won't mind that I normally write my review in Dutch... Maybe I will try my rusty skills at writing in English for a change... :-)
ReplyDeleteBooks to be read: The elephant vanishes (De olifant verdwijnt) and 1q84. Does that make me a Sheep man?
:-)
I will definitely join this non-chalenging challenge :)
ReplyDeleteI will write my sign-uppost soon :) great challenge Nat
I have 'Hardboiled Wonderland...' and 'The Elephant Vanishes' up for a reread, and I still haven't got around to Jay Rubin's biography yet!
ReplyDeletePlus all the reviews of the last two years, of course ;)
This sounds great- I don't have any Murakami books sitting unread on my shelf at the moment. I might set Hajime as a definite and try to work my way up to Sheep Man.
ReplyDeleteI can't choose between the 2 buttons. They're both good.
ReplyDeleteI will commit to the Hajime level and I am hoping to have a read along with Maree of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Love the cat tail button!
ReplyDeleteIt's been my goal to finish all the Murakami books I've not yet read, so I'm really looking forward to accomplishing that in 2011. With friends! Great buttons, great site, I'm really excited, Tanabata.
ReplyDeleteOnly 2 books not read , so a great deal of re-reading to be done, I;m glad you can post past reviews, as that will make life easier.
ReplyDeleteSigned up & posted a banner on my website :) Thanks for hosting this challenge, I am really looking forward to (re)reading Murakami!

ReplyDeleteI've never read Murakami's books before, but I own one that's waiting to be read :)
ReplyDeleteOh....you had to do it, didn't you? I thought I wasn't going to be tempted by any challenges for 2011. But then you HAD TO go and do this. Dang you, tanabata, dang you!!!! ;)
ReplyDeleteI've been planning to read some more of Haruki Murakami, so I'm game. (Next up on my reading list is The Wind-up Bird Chronicle.)

ReplyDeleteYES! I am a huge Murakami fan and I am SO ridiculously excited! WHOO HOO!
ReplyDeleteOh, as if I wasn't doing enough reading challenges this year! But I read a Murakame book every year anyway, so this one won't be anything too strenuous! I'll commit to 1 book but aim for three... I'll post review(s) on my Over Forty Shades blog.
ReplyDeleteI want to read everything that he has ever written. So count me in!
ReplyDeleteoh I LOVE the buttons! I have got Norwegian wood and South of the Border, west of the sun on my shelf.
ReplyDeleteI have never read anything by this author but the books intrigued me and this challenge sounded like something new an fun for the new year. I am only planning on reading one though but who knows I might get hooked and read more! I can't wait to start reading!
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of unread Murakami's... Good way of finally reading them, still I don't think I will go further than 2 books. Thakns for organizing. Now I will have to find out how to add the button...
ReplyDeletewould reading & posting on this be considered obsessional
ReplyDeleteMurakami Diary 2009 [Paperback]
Cats slink across the pages; the seasons are marked by cherry blossom and Japanese maple; spaghetti strands or telephone cords separate the days; and a generous selection of quotations and extracts from Murakami's novels and stories appear on almost every page to inspire, amuse or entertain. This is a diary like no other, faithful to all that is witty, surreal, sexy and beautiful in Murakami's work. A must-have for fans of Murakami, fans of Vintage fiction and fans of unique design, this diary will appeal to everyone as a quirky companion for 2009. & can I count it aS Non-fiction.
only semi-joking.
I will try and get a book or two read. I did listen to the audio for What I talk about when I talk about Running and loved every minute of it (twice over). Will see what I can read next.
ReplyDeleteI signed up. I haven't read Murakami before, so this is a good challenge for me.
ReplyDeleteI decided on a participation level and wrote my admission post!
ReplyDeletei've read 3 or 4 murakami books before but still have mixed feelings on him...so excited to reread some and to see what other people are writing about his books. i'll be doing "sheep man" level for now...awesome challenge, i'll be doing a post on my blog (probably after the new year) and will have a link to here then.
ReplyDeleteI love Murakami, and hope to read some of his work that I have not yet read, and will happily reread what I have already read :)
ReplyDeleteI found this challenge from Parrish Lantern. I have signed up for one book with a bunch of his sitting on my tbr list. A sort of forced read which is a good thing.
ReplyDeleteLove the blog style.
Yah! I have been meaning to read Murakami since signing up for the Japanese Literature Challenge and have only collected the reading pile! This is just what I need to nudge me into cracking those spines! Thank you for hosting this challenge! I'll be signing up with my post early next week!
ReplyDeleteAll will be rereads, except for Hear the Wind Sing. I'm going for the gold with this one.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I've been looking for an excuse to re-read my Murakami collection. teehee!
ReplyDeleteA New Year's resolution? =)
ReplyDelete- Eric
This is great stuff! Already a Super-frog but I've been meaning to read everything all over again!
ReplyDeleteI've read The Wind Up Bird Chronicle, Blind Willow Sleeping Woman, South of the Border West of the Sun, Norwegian Wood and The Elephant Vanishes. Will read Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World next. I'm a fan.
ReplyDeleteI've read a good chunk of his work but not all of it, this will be a good incentive (if there was need for one in the first place) to finish up the rest.
ReplyDeleteChecked in! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, I love Murakami and I will relish more reading!
ReplyDeleteGoing for 'Dance Dance Dance.' Its been on my reading list for YEARS! I dont know why thi s challenge is prompting me to read it, but I'm on my way to the bookstore now
ReplyDeletethe best way to start the new year Haruki Murakami it is then!!
ReplyDeletelove the idea !!
wonderful - i hope this exposes new readers to his work! - i thought i had read everything of his in english, but see i have missed his first two novels and his second nonfiction book! Along with IQ84(which I will pre-order now!), I'll check out the three I've missed, and reach the SUPER FROG level - how fun! Thanks for doing this!
ReplyDeleteYes, count me in! I've read most of it, so I'm def. in for "IQ84" (when it comes out in English), and maybe I'll try to me it through 'The Elephant Vanishes"
ReplyDeleteSince I've already read everything there is to read by Murakami, (in English) I will be reading 1Q84 when it is released.
ReplyDeleteI read everything by Murakami a couple years ago over the course of a few glorious months. Can't wait to do so again!
ReplyDeleteI am shooting for 5...
ReplyDeletehi..great idea..I've read most of his books, many several times but will gladly read both the new one and more in 2011..thanks for posting
ReplyDeleteThis should be fun! I'm reading my way through his body of work at the moment. Will finish Kafka by the Shore in the next two weeks and then begin South of the Border, West of the Sun.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea. I will participate in Nakata levle. 1. A Wild Sheep Chase 2. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the Wold 3. Pinball, 1973 4. Hear the Wind Sing 5 Dance Dance Dance 6 Underground 7.Birthday Stories **I could not open Underground since 1997 becuase the incident was very overwelming to me. It seems like a supersitition that it might happen again if I open the book and response to it. However, now is the time to break the jinx. Thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeletegreat idea! excited to join!
ReplyDeleteThis challenge is definitely for me.
ReplyDeleteSo sign in a Murakami reader in Sweden.
I'm in!
ReplyDeleteIt's an honor to read Murakami's writings again. But then the challenge is writing the reviews. They're different things. :)
Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to sign up...I have a yet unread Elephant Vanishes lying around.
ReplyDeleteI own a few of his books so I'll defently re-read norwegian wood and wind up Bird chronicle if there is time and The rest if the time I'll read whatever I haven't read before.
ReplyDeleteI love Murakami, have owned a few of his novels for a long time now, and have recently gotten back to reading new stuff. The local library has a good collection, and I am determined to get through all of those this coming year!
ReplyDeleteMy favourit was Norwegian wood, Murakami Haruki is a genius.
ReplyDeleteI own all of his books (minus 'Underground') and hopefully will get the chance to re-read them all before IQ84 is released in English!
ReplyDeleteI've been Murakami's books for many years, but I am looking forward to hearing what others think about them.
ReplyDeleteI have not read anything that good in 30 years. I just finished IO84 ( translated i german)
ReplyDeleteI may not count though...in the challenge
I'd love to sign up for the Sheep Man: Read 3 books. :)
ReplyDeleteI actually wanted to read more books in 2011.
みなさんがんばって! ^ ^
I want to read all the books of Haruki Murakami. Some interesting and fun to read the paper too. Norwegian Wood movies soon hope to see in Korea.
ReplyDeleteHappy to have read 12 of his books, of course I'm dying to read 1Q84! I'll do my best to re-read them and write some notes on his books, but I'm mostly using his reading as ideas and influences for my own writing. Happy to be part of this challenge!
ReplyDeleteGot three on my bedside table right now! I am so in!
ReplyDeleteI think I have read most of his books! I have just finished his collection of interviews edited by himself. It is called " I wake up to dream every morning. "
ReplyDeleteJust ordered 1q84...can't wait!
ReplyDeleteMy first new read of 2011 and for the challenge will be Norwegian Wood. Good luck everyone!
ReplyDeleteI want to be part of this great challenge, I already read 3 books by Murakami. Lots more to go, excellent!
ReplyDeleteAlessandra Scola (from London)
Not sure which books I will read, but this year they will finally be read instead of traveling all over Central America!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to start this challenge! I'm going to go for the Nakata rank and read 7 to start with.
ReplyDelete¿Por qué no un reto en español? yo acabaré mis Murakami empezados
ReplyDeleteI guess Iam Sumire... I wanna read 1Q84!!! there´s not english translation nor spanish
ReplyDeleteIgnoring this challenge would be silly. I'm gonna go for it! Good luck, everyone!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to this. Been a major Murakami fan for about twenty years now and there are a couple of his books I've yet to read and many I want to re-read. By the way, my site has also reviewed several Murakami film adaptations and even had a podcast dedicated to the film version of Tony Takitani:

I shall be a Sheep Man!
ReplyDeletesuper frog here i come! guess there will be a lot of re-reading to do :)
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS SO AWESOME. GONNA DO IT.
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to get into his books after hearing my IB English teacher rave about him.
ReplyDeleteSuper-frog, here I go!
As if I needed any more encouragement to read Murakami. So excited!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any Murakami since "Hard-boiled wonderland," which was great - hoping to read all this year - thanks for the encouragement.
ReplyDeleteJust started Kafka on the Shore !
ReplyDeleteCan't wait! Murakami's amazing and this will give me an excuse to read the books i haven't and re-read the ones I have
ReplyDeleteGreat. I had three books on my list for this year anyway.
ReplyDeleteI read 2 books: Tokyo Blues and "Kafka sulla spiaggia" (Kafka on the Shore )now I'm going to read: "l'arte di correre" (What I Talk About When I Talk About Running) and "dance dance dance" ... stay tuned!
ReplyDeleteLidia
Looking forward to doing this!
ReplyDeleteCall me Hajime. Tha would be my level.
ReplyDeleteWell. I write my reviews in German. I hope someone can understand this rare language.
Yay, I'm so looking forward to this!
ReplyDeleteBring on Sumire challenge!
I think After Dark was probably my favourite read of 2010 and I now want to read more!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a fantastic idea - I've only read 3 of his books so far!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to it. Good luck to all!
ReplyDeleteGreat iniative!! I have publish it on my Facebook wall, since I do not have a blog yet. It's a fantastic idea!!
ReplyDeleteI'm in! I read three books so far, and signing up for more! :O)
ReplyDeleteLove this challenge, I will start with 1Q84 in Polish and then Hard boiled wonderland in spanish, let see how many I will read;)
ReplyDeleteI just finished Wind-Up Bird Chronicle! :D I want to read the stories in the Elephant Vanishes next! :)
ReplyDeleteSo excited to get started and just ordered my books today: "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running" and the "Wind Up Bird Chronicle". Not sure what I will choose for my Sheepman Challenge.
ReplyDeleteWell, I think I've already read them all ... but I'm happy to reread "The Wind-up Bird Chronicle" and "Kafka on the Shore" which are my two personal favourites. I hope this challenge brings a lot of new fans to this phenomenal author. All the best!
ReplyDeleteI've only just come across Haruki Murakami's work -- I was given the best-selling 'Norwegian Wood' as a present and already can't put it down!
ReplyDeleteAlthough the beginning seemed to be a bit 'jerky' to me, I am becoming more and more hooked as I turn each page.
Murakami has a simple yet wonderful way with words. Masterfully mixing pathos with (at times rather disturbing) humour, he also has the ability to spin a colourful turn of phrase that is reminiscent of if not equal to the 'greats' such as Hunter S Thompson, Marcel Proust, Charles Dickens and F Scott Fitzgerald.
I have a feeling I will wanting to read (much) more of Murakami's work soon enough. ;0)
somewhere between Toru and Nakata.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! have read Norwegian Wood, Sputnik Sweetheart, After Dark,What I Talk About When I Talk About Running. Now reading 1Q84 and Kafka on the shore. Blind willow and A wild Sheep Case waiting on the shelf!
ReplyDeletelove the great idea!!!! Yesterday I finished Kafka on the shore....fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteJ'ai presque tout lu de Monsieur Murakami. J'ai vraiment hâte de lire son dernier livre.
ReplyDeleteC'est mon auteur préféré. Je serai alors un sheep man!
I'm so in! ^_^
ReplyDeleteMy favorite: Kafka by the Shore , Norvegian Wood.
ReplyDeleteI read Dance,dance..., Sheep Man
Eva from Hungary
A wonderful idea. I love Murakami's writing but I've never actually finished one of his novels... disgraceful. Now let's see. :)
ReplyDelete-A
See my list here: http://www.vkblog.nl/bericht/363506/The_Haruki_Murakami_reading_challenge_2011
ReplyDeleteGoing for superfrog...
I've got a bunch of Murakami books lined up in my "to read" list... hope to get to at least one, hopefully two, this year.
ReplyDeleteNice challenge!
I'm in!
ReplyDeleteFinally I wrote an introductory post, yea! ^^
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I love it. :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful idea! :)
ReplyDeleteFor now - Hajime. If I find Murakami interesting, I will read more ;)
ReplyDeleteI actually just started After Dark and will finish soon, would have reviewed it on my blog anyway, so I'll participate! After that maybe I'll go for Wild Sheep Chase. good contest idea.
ReplyDeleteThis is sweet! I already had The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle on my 2011 reading list, so maybe now I can add a few more.
ReplyDeleteI can hit Toru before I need to buy more books. So we'll burn that bridge when we get to it.
ReplyDeleteI'm in! :) Great job!
ReplyDeleteNakata, for now ;))
I am just about to finish my first Murakami book (Hardboiled Wonderland) and I've already ordered two more...this is PERFECT timing! I can't believe it's taken me so long to find this brilliant author! Very excited about this.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to reading 1Q84!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reading challenge.
ReplyDeleteI am in and planning to start at one book !
Looking forward to reading with you :)
This challenge fits perfect with my plans to read two Murakami books this year. Yay!
ReplyDeleteI have already read 3 (on 2010) so does taht count already. I am planning on reading Kafka on the shore and Cronica del pajaro que le da la vuelta al mundo (that title is on spanich because I do not know how is written in english, but is the one about the bird)
ReplyDeleteWhat other Murakami books are available for reading; I already read "Sputnik, My love", "Tokio Blues", "El fin del mundo y un despiadado pais de las maravillas" (also in spanish because I do not know the title in english)
Love Murakami, and will try to read everything of his I haven't read yet which I think is about 5 or 6.
ReplyDeleteDo count GatheringBooks in. Our IT expert in the site, Mary, is a huge Murakami fan. As far as I can recall, I have read only one, but I have several more in my TBR pile. So yes! We shall join! =)
ReplyDeleteI have only read Norweign Wood which was about a year ago. Reading even one more of his books this year would be great.
ReplyDeleteI just discovered this challenge and had to sign up immediately! Murakami is one of my favourite authors but I haven't been reading him much lately. This is great motivation to catch up on some of the titles I already have. Thanks for organising it Tanabata!
ReplyDeleteWow just found this - count me in!!!
ReplyDeleteim in :D
ReplyDeleteI read my first Murakami -- "After Dark" -- last year and admired it, but "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" has been highly recommended to me. Also, I'm thinking about taking up running this year, and perhaps entering a race, so "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running" might be a good choice.
ReplyDeleteHello, I am #392 - I erroneously put down my name (Myra) instead of our blog site (GatheringBooks). At any rate, we have put up our blogpost about participating in this reading challenge to be found here: http://gatheringbooks.wordpress.com/2011/01/17/gatheringbooks-gears-up-for-2011-reading-challenges-in-the-blogworld/
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting this. We look forward to writing our reviews.
reading Jay Rubin's Murakami and the Music of Words, and it seems like an apt prelude to joining this challenge! i'm truly excited :)
ReplyDeleteI'm joining too, I have a few to read anyway!
ReplyDeleteSo excited to be a part of this! Finally, people who love (or will soon love) Murakami as much as I do!
ReplyDeleteRe-reading The Wind-up Bird Chronicle to start the challenge! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! Love his work and am hoping to read a few more of his books this year.
ReplyDeleteJust finished Norwegian Wood!
ReplyDeleteI read about this challenge in a _Salon_ article, without realizing that I have unintentionally read a Murakami book in each of the previous two years. In 2009, I read _Kafka on the Shore_ and in 2010, I read _Norwegian Wood_. This year, I will prioritize what is often revered as his masterpiece, _The Wind Up Bird Chronicle_, although I may add even more Murakami to my personal "100-books in 2010" goal. What an awesome challenge!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI'm in! Love the idea :]
ReplyDeleteI love Murakami's work, count me in!
ReplyDeleteGood news for us Murakami fans in the US.... here is the article from Galley Cat -
ReplyDelete“Haruki Murakami’s long-awaited magnum opus, 1Q84, out from Knopf 10/25. In one volume.
linked here:
http://www.mediabistro.com/galleycat/haruki-murakami-1q84-coming-1025-in-single-volume_b22114
I have read and own everything Murakami has ever written, including the elusive Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973. I just finished Norwegian Wood for a third time, and will be revisiting Kafka on the Shore soon. I'll dive into the rest later.
ReplyDeleteI'm in too, as a big Murakami fan. I have on my list 1Q84 (all three volumes, out in Spain in 2011, the first two tomorrow!), 'Dance, dance, dance', 'After the Quake' (I started it last week), 'What I talk about when I talk about running' (re-read)and 'Underground'... That makes 7 books. I have already read the rest!
ReplyDeleteGreetings from www.isaiasfanlo.com
I love Murakami's books, i'm so happy to be part of this...
ReplyDeleteWind-Up Bird Chronicle; here I come!
ReplyDeleteOk, so I am at Nakata as of today, having read the English versions of "A Wild Sheep Chase," "The Wind-up Bird Chronicle," "Sputnik Sweetheart," "Kafka on the Shore," "After Dark," and "After the Quake."Aiming for Sumire this year, if I'm able to find the other books! I'm really enjoying this challenge!
ReplyDeleteMurakami is the best!
ReplyDeletemeep! learning new things in the world of H.M ;)
ReplyDeleteWould be interested in other people reviews of What I talk about when i talk about running - only other one seems to be in portugeese which i canna read :P
ReplyDeleteHi Radiator Reader my small post on this book, is number 8, on the review page. Personally loved the book, so I hope you will enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteAll the best,
Parrish.
Så ja. NU är jag med på denna utmaning. http://sockerblomman.se
ReplyDeleteHi all -- right, so this is my first foray into the works of Murakami, and I am thrilled to take on the challenge! I've only heard great things about the author, so it should be an excellent year of new books!
ReplyDeleteWill aim for Super Frog, but we shall see. Can't wait for 1Q84.
ReplyDeletethis is my first book, finished about a week ago...nice timing...i heard about the challenge today
ReplyDeletethe link to the review on my main blog:

http://warriorway.tumblr.com/post/2471657871/dawn-in-mongolia-was-an-amazing-thing-in-one
I've only read one Murakami, After Dark, and loved it. Perfect excuse to read more (like I needed one. Hooray!
ReplyDeleteAttends impatiemment la traduction de 1q84 en français
ReplyDeletei am a superfrog, eagerly awaiting new book.
ReplyDeleteI want to read more than one but somehow the level Sheep man doesnt sounds good. . . i loved "the wind-up bird chronicle" so this shouldnt be that hard, which books do you recommendo from murakami's work?
ReplyDeleteGlad I stumbled across this. Once I read Hear The Wind Sing, I'll have read everything translated in to English.
ReplyDeleteI'm already on two Murakami books so far this year. I want to reread several books too. I'm trying to read 52 books in total this year, so I'm happy that several Murakami's will be devoured.
Hello guys I just joined the Murakami Reading Challenge and had just read Norwegian Wood (Jay Rubin translation). I am going to go for Kafka on the Shore next and read all his other works before buying 1Q84 in October later.
ReplyDeleteHere's a link to the wonderful trailer for the movie to be released in the UK in March - Norwegian Wood -
ReplyDeleteIt looks gorgeous!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYBgsyBwYso&feature=player_embedded
Found via Shelf Awareness.
I just bought South of The Border, East of the Sun yesterday to satiate my frequent need for a Murakami fix (I've read eight so far), and i'm psyched to see that this exists :) Fitting, because once I finish it, I'll be Hajime, right at the beginning again.
ReplyDeleteMight even convince me to reread Kafka by the Shore, my personal favorite :)
so cool, if i already read 10 of his books do I qualify for the most complex option? (i{ve even wrote his short prose)
ReplyDeleteI just posted my review on Sputnik Sweetheart. It was my second Murakami and I enjoyed it a lot. I'm not sure which one will be next. I could read 1Q84 as the German translation is already out but I think I'll go for Norwegian Wood.
ReplyDeleteI take you up on your challenge. Let's read and write about Murakami!
ReplyDeleteI just read "After the Quake" and i'm beginning to read "Hear the Wind Sings", both for the first time ever. After that I will be reading "1Q84" and "Underground". I love them all!
ReplyDeleteI read and re-read Murakami on a habitual basis. I mostly read his work in Chinese, and over the years I have quite a large collection of Murakami's works.
ReplyDeleteThis is like a god-send challenge. I am really glad that there are tonnes of people also reading him.
I will let my cat know that we are having this challenge, as he's called Murakami.
Happy reading.
Just cracked open Kafka on the Shore - I've read quite a few of Murakami's books, but I thought this challenge would be good motivation to get through a few I've been saving.
ReplyDeleteI am going for 3 books this year, I do not participate to many challenges, yours and Bellezza I still do
ReplyDeleteThank-you Nat for this interesting challenge :)
A bit late, but I want to challenge myself too. I have a homepage written in norwegian, where i post reviews of books I have read. Sorry its not in english... :/ But we luckily got Google Translate if anyone is interested :)
ReplyDeleteI'll read one book. Never read anything from him before, so I just want a little taste, hehe ;)
Not Strictly Murakami, but about the man is Jay Rubin's book - Haruki Murakami & the music of words, it provides a fascinating insight into the authors work.
ReplyDeleteWill do
ReplyDeleteAlready waiting for 1Q84 in english
I'm almost a SUPER-FROG!
ReplyDeleteAll right! I've finished Kafka On The Shore, Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Sputnik Sweetheart, After Dark and started Norweigen Wood. That leaves only four more Murakami novels in my collection to read. Well on my way to be a Super-Frog!
ReplyDelete"kafka on the shore" done!
ReplyDeletehere is my review on it
http://artang.wordpress.com/2011/05/24/a-postmodern-novel/
I just came across the article on this on 'The Vine' and I jumped at the challenge. I love books and I can't wait to discover the workings of Haruki Murakami (of which I haven't had the pleasure of reading yet). I haven't chosen which novel I am going to begin with, but once I do you'll be the first to know!

i went through a murakami phase and haven't touched his books in ages! :)
ReplyDeleteyay! I'm in for it! Read 3 of Murakami's books this year and I hope to read more! ;)
ReplyDeletefinally got, read & posted on 1973.
ReplyDeleteI have read two of Murakami's books years ago, now I am up to a new challenge and I have 5 of his books to keep me company this year... I will let you know how it goes :)
ReplyDeleteProgress so far:
ReplyDelete1. Kafka on the shore
2. Wind up bird chronicle
3. norwegian wood
which others should I read?
This just got me out of wondering which book to read next... :D
ReplyDeleteSooooooooooommmmmmmme I'm starting this challenge way late, but I love Murakami's work so I'm excited to get started! My goal is meet the Nakata level- 7 books or more.
ReplyDeleteHappy reading!
i sort of went on a murakami rampage one year and read quite a few. it's time for a re-read! great challenge! and i love those buttons!
ReplyDeleteSuper excited about this!
ReplyDeleteI read about this earlier in the year, and wanted to get through most of Murakami's work before joining/commenting. I can proudly say I have read every work of his in English except for South of the Border, West of the Sun which I can read in one sitting. And IQ84 which is sadly not released until October!
ReplyDeleteNot sure if my original comment got posted (I just signed in to my google account after attempting to post it), but the gist of it was that I've read all of Murakami's works except for South of the Border, West of the Sun so far in 2011 and am eagerly awaiting IQ84's English release. =) Cool challenge!
ReplyDeleteSigning up! I've already read two Murakami books this year but I'm planning on reading a few more before IQ84's English translation is published. What a fantastic challenge!
ReplyDeleteI've got The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Norwegian Wood sitting on my bookshelf just waiting for a challenge like this! I love Murakami and am pleased to have an extra reason to read more of his books.
ReplyDeleteAlso recommend reading his non-fic What I Talk About When I Talk About Running - interesting insight into the man himself.
I read and loved Norwegian Wood.
ReplyDeleteHere's the review (in spanish) I wrote for a webpage I work for: http://www.eltrisom.com/2011/06/19/100-yenes-por-norweigan-wood/
I've read almost everyone except for Kafka on the Shore and 1Q84 :)
ReplyDeleteI'm coming to this a bit late in the year, but really want to join and read at least one more Murakami this year.
ReplyDeletei thought i'd already signed in!? have had the button up for a while :). have read a few, definitely time to get in more murakami's in my reading list!
ReplyDeleteI finished Kafka on the Shore earlier this year and I've been on a Murakami binge! I'm well on my way for this challenge :)
ReplyDeleteAnother Toru / Nakata checked in :>
