Haruki Murakami Reading Challenge 2012
Thanks to everyone who joined the Haruki Murakami Reading Challenge for 2011. It was so great to see people all over the world reading Murakami. I know I still have several Murakami stories that I'd like to read, or re-read, so are YOU ready to keep reading too?
This is the sign-up post for the Haruki Murakami Reading Challenge 2012. The challenge "rules" are almost the same as the 2011 challenge, but please note a change regarding the sign-up list below. And as before, the goal of the challenge is simply to encourage you to discover, or re-discover, the unique story-telling of Haruki Murakami. It's a really flexible challenge and all you have to do to participate is read at least one book by Haruki Murakami in 2012. However, there are several levels of participation to choose from, for those that want to immerse themselves more in Murakami's surreal worlds.
Levels of participation:
Hajime - Read one book
Sheep Man - Read 3 books
Toru - Read 5 books
Nakata - Read 7 books
Sumire - Read 10+ books
Super-frog - Read everything Murakami has written! (that is available in English, or your preferred language) For a list of the books available in English, visit the Books Page.
Things to keep in mind:
*The goal is simply to read something/ANYthing by Haruki Murakami.
*Whether you're a complete newbie, or already a huge Murakami fan, everyone is welcome to join in.
*You can join in anytime throughout the year.
*Feel free to grab one of the Murakami Challenge badges to display on your own site, but please save them to your own computer first. You'll notice a new button at the top of this post, but I've also updated the previous badges for 2012 if you prefer to use one of the "original" ones.
*There is no need to list the books you plan to read in advance, and even if you do, you can change them, or your level of participation, at any time.
*You don't have to have a blog to participate. You can also share your thoughts on Goodreads, LibraryThing, Tumblr, Twitter, etc. Or provide a guest post here!
*Crossovers with other challenges are allowed.
*Books should be read between January 1st and December 31st, 2012.
*Please share your reviews of the Murakami books you read for the challenge. This is not required but we'd love to hear what you thought. I also welcome you to submit reviews to any of Murakami's books or stories that you have read and reviewed previously. And reviews in any language are welcome. More on the 'Submit a review' page.
*Books can be in any format: paper, ebooks, audio.
*Rereads are allowed, and encouraged.
*There will be prizes (details to be decided).
And most importantly, have fun!
Sign up for the Haruki Murakami Reading Challenge in the Mr. Linky below. If you have an introductory post about the challenge, please link to it directly. Otherwise, you can simply add a link to your blog's home page. If you don't have a blog, you can also sign up with your Tumblr, Goodreads, Library Thing, Twitter, or Facebook account. In a change from the 2011 challenge, please DO NOT use the Murakami Challenge blog's URL to sign up. If you don't wish to link up any personal site, please simply leave a comment with your name (and contact information) on this post -- in the comment section, NOT the Mr. Linky. Any sign-ups that link back to this blog will be deleted.
Now that you've signed up, don't forget to come back here to the challenge blog to add your reviews, and to follow the blog to be notified of giveaways and other Murakami-related news throughout the year. You can also follow the Murakami Challenge Twitter account, or 'Like' the Murakami Challenge Facebook Page for updates.
Happy reading!
P.S. Please note that I am not affiliated with Haruki Murakami or his publishers. I'm simply a fan who decided to host a reading challenge, because one can never have enough Murakami. ;)

I am totally useless at challenges but I do want to try and make time for a Murakami so I am having a go! You have made it very flexible for the time-poor and incompetent I see! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI've joined up as I have several Murakami books on Kindle and on my shelves that I plan to read next year. I've also listed two reviews from past years.
ReplyDeleteHere's my Reading Challenge 2012
Thanks, tanabata!
Always up for a challenge - especially one that involves Murakami! (*^_^)v
ReplyDeleteI read one Murakami last year. Glad you are continuing the challenge. I plan to read 1Q84 in January.
ReplyDeleteJoined :)
ReplyDeleteHi, I've been flooding you post. Sorry for that, for another favor please delete all the comments I posted above. I think it was the last 3 comments from wordpress. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis is my second year joining the fun unfortunately, I'm not done yet with my challenge this year. I might do harder this coming 2012 with more love and fun with Murakami and you guys. See you around and Happy New Year, wish you the best!
My goal was to read three this year...I've read one so far and am on my second one, which I should finish by midnight tonight. I'll be in next year, with the goal to read two. Maybe that way, I'll actually read three. :)
ReplyDeleteCount me in! I'm hoping to read one Murakami book.
ReplyDeleteI'm goin' for Round Two! Finish up the books I never got around to reading (and reviewing), if that's alright... :D
ReplyDeleteLet's do this thing! Nakata level!
Second year joining - spent all of last year looking forward to 1Q84 but when it finally came out, I hadn't enough time to commit to reading it so I failed the challenge last year. This year, I'm going to do it!
ReplyDeleteI'm in again. I already have 1Q84 books ! and 2 on my TBR pile so should at least be able to get the first level. I'm just linking to my blog because I'm planning to do one long reading challenges post and still have some to decide on
ReplyDeleteYAY!!
ReplyDeleteI am currently on my 5th Murakami book but i have 2 pending at the library.
I just love his books. They take me to an alternate world.
I was late to the party last year and got total Murakami envy.
ReplyDeletePlus I got a big stack of 1Q84 for Christmas, and then in explaining Murakami to my nearest and dearest, realised that all his other novels have kind of snarled themselves into a big knot in my brain, and I now can't remember what happens in which.
Time for a reread.
I'm joining up. I love Murakami and I'm going to try to read three this year. First up is After Dark.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to read some books of Murakami.. now im reading 1Q84
ReplyDeleteGreat blog, I found it by chance. I'll follow you.
ReplyDeleteCheers from Argentina.

Read Murakami's "The Wind Up Bird Chronicle" last year and have just bought "Kafka on the Shore", I'm not a quick reader, but I hope to read more Murakami through 2012.

ReplyDeleteHi, Nat,
ReplyDeleteThis is Sumi (Owl59)
I finally joined Murakami Challenge!
Keep up this wonderful challenge!
Thank you!
Hello, I've been an avid Murakami reader for years but I've still have 2 or 3 of his books to tackle. Your challenge just looked like the perfect guideline for it.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Last year I anticipated on reading about 5 but only finished one. This year I'll just assume I'll read one haha;) Though I'm sure I'll read more this time around.
ReplyDeleteIt will be an honor to sign up for this challenge. I was only introduced to Haruki Murakami's novels in the Spring of 2011 and have completely fallen in love with him. I now have his entire collection - have read a few and can't wait to dig into the rest.
ReplyDeleteHappy Reading!!
Sign me up. I'm in the process of finishing "Kafka on the Shore" and I can't get enough of it! Lezzdewdis!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting again this fantastic challenge! I was so pleased to rediscover Murakami through last year's challenge that I am looking forward to reading more of his work, and my plan is three new books! :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to join!
ReplyDeleteI'm late to the party but eager to join in! I've already read three Murakami books to date this year and reviewed them. :)
ReplyDeleteAlright, someone from my library reading group told me to get as many books by Murakami as possible, so here I am. I feel more easily motivated to get them read if I am doing it with other people. I have not yet posted anything about this reading challange, but a blog post will surely be up soon enough on http://theyear2011-cassandra.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteYay, I just discovered this challenge today and I'm super excited to participate! I've already read all of his books except IQ84 (still getting through it, ha) so this is a great motivator.
ReplyDeleteHi! This is Iratxe Martinez. What a great idea, I already added the button to my blog. In 2012 I have read 1Q84 (does it count as 1 or 3 books?) and wind up bird chronicle but im reading more for sure!
ReplyDeleteawesome! my goal is Sumire. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to begin the challenge but not sure which to start with.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog! I'm in!
ReplyDeleteHi Murakami fans! I'll go for Toru level. So excited...
ReplyDeleteThis is a great blog! Would really like to join the reading challenge, please count me in!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to get started! The Trilogy of the Rat awaits.
ReplyDeleteSo excited! :D
ReplyDeleteSuper excited. I've already read couple of books. Started this year. Brilliant project.
ReplyDeleteWould really love to join the reading challenge!! I have signed up already:)
ReplyDeleteSo excited about this challenge! Love all his books. Read them all. Will now re-read.
ReplyDeleteThe first book I ever read by Murakami was "After Dark". I guess it really matched the books I've ever wanted to read ever since moving away from feel-good to teenage novels. Through the challenge, I hope I could keep up with it by reading at min 3 and at max 7 books by him until the end of 2012! :)
ReplyDeleteI've never read any Murakami :S But I'm glad I've seen this reading challenge that has motivated me to get down to the library XD
ReplyDeleteHey! I found this blog site on Facebook and decided to check it out. I've read 14 Murakami books, included his short stories and I'm eager to join this reading challenge site.
ReplyDeletePosted my After Dark review! Squeaked in right before 2012 ends, so yay :D
